Rates and Fees

The first question most merchants ask is:
"What are your rates"?

The response one gets could range from 1.59% to upwards of 4.5% (and higher).  But the "rate" is only one part of the complex equation.

Q - So what determines a merchants' true costs?
A - Many factors...

First off, there are dozens of different InterChange rates charged by the Card Associations (Visa and MasterCard), for dozens of different merchant categories.

The primary elements which make up the actual costs are: The discount rate %, dues and assessments, the transaction fee/InterChange per item fee and the network authorization/communication fee...Plus the Bank's mark-up.

There can also be a wide range of ancillary fees, such as:

  • Monthly minimum fee
  • Network inquiry fee
  • Communication fee
  • Key-entered fee
  • Address verification fee
  • Voice authorization fee
  • Batch/settlement fee
  • Charge Back fee

  • Account update fee

So take your time when considering which company you want handling your money!  And be sure to read the merchant processing agreement before signing it.
